Megan Christenson, spoke to the Rotary Club about “Climate and Health Trends & Resources.” Megan is from the Health Department in Madison (Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Health). Based on historical data, the Wisconsin climate is getting warmer and wetter. Looking at the years from 1950-2006, we are getting more rain, have less snow cover and are getting a longer growing season. The CDC has started climate and health programs in 16 states to cover rising sea levels and more extreme weather events. Potential public health impacts include dealing with heat, drought, severe winter weather, travel injuries, power outages, mental health and economic impacts. Priority populations include low income, communities of color, the elderly, children and pregnant women. There is mini-grant funding available for projects related to health impacts from climate change. They have toolkits and videos for the public and other resources on their website.
