Program – Tim Dittloff: Full Sail Leadership Academy
There will be a new member event at Friends on the Square on Monday, February 19th. Ask potential new members to join us. We hope to reach our goal of 60 members.
Our speaker was Tim Dittloff, from Full Sail Leadership Academy. He also is involved with True North Maritime Academy. Tim talked to us about sailing and how it is great for team building. Characteristics of an effective team/ leader are trust, candor, and clear expectations. Sailing helps promote these. He recommended two books: The Loyalist Team by Linda Adams and Ocean of Insight by Heather Mann. Tim does racing on Lake Michigan, has his Captain’s license and hosts half-day and full-day workshops. He quoted a Stanford University study that stated successful teams have clarity of purpose, clear and demanding performance goals, and individuals who carry their own weight. The Coast Guard promotes leadership teams based on 21 core competencies. These core competencies are further broken down into “managing self, working with others, and performance.” These include conquering fear, building self-reliance, mindfulness, team togetherness, fueling compassion and enjoying the moment. He left us with a quote from Willie McBride, “Better people make better sailors.”
