Program – Gary Dunhan: Habitat for Humanity

Happy Birthday wishes to Jon Newman. Kathy Hanssen talked about Friday, May 3, Rotary anniversary dinner, the invitations are in the mail. Cost is $50 or $40 for current members and you must RSVP whether you are going or not. You should pay in advance or at the door, it cannot be put on your Rotary bill. This is not a fundraiser and includes the cost of appetizers, dinner, wine and live music at the Monte Carlo room.
Elkhorn’s boys basketball team is going to state and will play this Friday at the Kohl Center. If you are not going to Madison, you can watch it locally at the Pepperoni Pub. Chris Aune has a wager on the game with their local pub and the loser will contribute to their Athletic department.
Everyone is encouraged to come to “Dancing for a New Beginning” on March 30. This fundraiser will benefit the new domestic abuse shelter.
Our speaker was Gary Dunham, the President of Habitat for Humanity in Walworth County. They will be starting a new build this spring and are currently in the process of locating an eligible family. The last house they built was in Whitewater for a family with seven children. This was their largest home with over 1900 square feet. After the next family is selected, a home will be created to fit their needs. This one will be in the Pell Lake area. Habitat for Humanity is selector, builder and banker, they charge no interest on the home loan. The cost to build is usually between $65-75,000. The average payment for homeowners is $475 and includes the mortgage and taxes. Homeowners must invest 250 hours in sweat equity for each adult who will be living there. They already have enough money to build this home and the next one, but need help in the building process. Their goal is to build one home per year. They have another program called, A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) that helps current homeowners who need help with home repairs or a project like painting, a new furnace, etc. The homeowner is charged, usually a lower amount, and pay as they can. Anyone can recommend a family if you see a need. Visit their website, www.habitatwalworth.org for more information, or to donate, volunteer or recommend a family. Anyone can get involved.
