Program – Jeff Reed, Rotary District Governor

Kids from Wisconsin program is on August 18 and six volunteers are needed to work that night. Event is at the Waterford High School.

Jeff Reed, District Governor, was our speaker. Jeff is a member of the FonduLac Rotary Club and comes from a background in business having worked for Xerox and was also a Professor of Psychology in New York. This year’s theme is “Rotary: making a difference”. There are many reasons to join Rotary- because you are asked, because you want to network, make friends, get involved, service to your community and also the international component. For Jeff, his ‘Rotary moment’ was when he traveled to Russia and helped with a Micro Loan Project. He also told us about a project in Lima, Peru, that involved a soy bakery that made soy milk and bread. There are many projects that clubs get involved in- literacy, Habitat for Humanity, Friendship Exchange and many more. Some 2017-18 goals are to help the environment, plant a tree for each member in your club for Earth Day, April 22, 2018. Another goal is polio eradication which we have been working on since 1985. What is Rotary value? What do you get back? Jeff talked about the Presidential Citation. Based on their Strategic Plan, they want to focus on three areas 1) Support and strengthen clubs 2) Focus and increase humanitarian service and 3) Enhance public image and awareness. To be eligible for the Presidential Citation you need to pay your dues/invoices on time and report volunteer hours and service project contributions. Jeff also talked about the Rotary Foundation which is celebrating its 100th year. The Foundation started in 1917 with $26 and has since given out millions. Rotary is also involved with youth and has a Youth World Affairs Seminar which Elkhorn sent three people to. The theme was social justice. There is also Rotary Youth Exchange. TriCon 2018 is a collaborative project of three Rotary Districts in Wisconsin and will be held in Wisconsin Dells May 4-6, 2018. You can register now.
