Rotary Program Summary 9/18/19
Topic: Maa Viva - The Institute for Interconnectedness
Presenter: Dana L. Burns
“Maa Viva” stands for long live the Earth. This organization was founded due to growing concerns about pollutuion, war, the refugee crisis deforestation, over crowding, extreme weather, poverty, animal poaching, drought and terrorism. The focus of Maa Viva is finding solutions; including new ways to work on providing aide. Maa Viva has the ability to work in a small, yet effective, way to form relationships directly with partners. To date, they have had a positive impact in such African countries as: Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, and Cameroon.
Maa Viva supports what is essential for survival: water, food, shelter / comfort, entergy, waste treatment, and social aspects of life. Today’s presentation focused on developing and building sustainable structures utilizing “eco-tecture”. Dana Burns shared the designs of various home models they have built. These structures are able to stay thermal neutral year round; finding ways to provide natural air conditioning even in the tropics. Often, tires are used to make thermal mats to keep things heated or cool. Natural materials and modern ingenuity are also being used to collect water off of metal roofs; thus addressing the water shortage.
Another focus of Maa Viva has been assisting individuals to begin to meet their needs through small projects. For example, funds have been used to assist individuals in purchasing and planting trees. As the trees grow, they produce food and provide cooler conditions. This form of “direct community empowerment”, utilizing small amounts of money, can lead to critical changes.
