Announcements and Updates:
Happy Halloween and please remember that we will not meet on Wednesday, October 31.
World Polio Day was October 24th.
10% of the profits from all meals served at Culvers last Wednesday will go to Rotary as members served food from 4:00 - 7:00 that evening as a fundraiser.
Stir it Up is on the horizon - November 4th.
Tom Oehler increased the level of volunteer urgency to “high” status. People are needed for set up on Saturday, November 3rd, as well as Sunday, November 4th. We are noticing a lower participation from students this year, due to another event on the afternoon of the 4th.
New Beginnings Shelter Update
Ward Phillips shared the exciting news that the location of the shelter will be across from the Elkhorn police department in the former Aurora Building. It was donated to the group through the efforts of John Henderson working with the Kaputzka family and Aurora Health. They have kindly donated this space. There will be five suits that will house 20 - 25 people before they are moved into transitional housing. The location will also provide for meeting, programming, and counseling space. Sugar Creek Lutheran Church as also approved a donation of $50,000 for the shelter as well. Please note - Thursday, November 1st at 6:00 at City Hall there is a planning commission meeting. Ward requested that Rotarians attend this meeting to show support for the New Beginnings Shelter.
Rotary Exchange Program
We welcomed AC (Anna Clara), our exchange student from Denmark to our meeting. John Henderson also shared that our outbound student for 2019-20 has been secured and will be a good representative for our Rotary group. At the present time, it costs approximately $6800 to participate in the 11 month program abroad. John approached the Rotary Club to see if the club would provide $3,000 in assistance for our 2019-20 student. A motion was made by Sara Nichols to provide the funds, and seconded by Tom Oehler. The motion was then approved by the club.
New Member Orientation
New Member orientation is set for is 6pm November 19 at John and Jean Henderson's home. If you are new to Rotary and would like to know more about what Rotary does, you won't want to miss this opportunity to ask questions, make suggestions and learn how you can make a difference in our own community and around the world!
Mark Your Calendar… Open Arms Clinic has their Gala event on December 7.
The cost for one table is $1,250. Here are a couple of different suggestions for this event. Please provide input to our Rotary president, Dawn Heath, at dtheath16@gmail.com
a. We sponsor the table out of our foundation account - we've already raised this money to
help strengthen our community let's do so.
b. We sponsor the table out of our budget at $750 and all those who attend from our club to
fill the table pay $50 per seat at the table.
c. We sponsor the table out of our foundation account and invite staff from Open Arms who
can't afford to attend to fill the table
Rotary Program Summary 10/24/18:
Topic: Rotary Facebook Page and Club Runner
Yeah - 100th “like” was reached during the meeting
Rotary members Chad Robinson and Amanda Kostman provided information and updates today regarding the Rotary Facebook page and Club Runner. As we are aware, the Elkhorn Rotary Club is present on Facebook. The purpose of this page is to get the message about Rotary out in the community. Suggestions were given to club members to increase our presence on social media. For example, we need to go beyond “liking” things on this site to “sharing” things on our own Facebook pages. This will push out the message and work we do through Facebook. Amanda challenged us to take a picture of the Rotary Four-Way Test when we post it on our own Facebook pages, also share that it was a great Rotary meeting today. This type of activity will begin to start conversations and perhaps grow our membership.
As Chad summarized, it is simple mathematics - more posting leads to more engagement and increase in newsfeed. Down the road we can also look at advertising on Facebook for future Rotary events as well.
Club Runner, another site, is our host for the Rotary Home Page. You can use this site to get in touch with one another. IF you are locked out - it will email you a new password to resume your connection to the site. Under membership tab at the top, you can get to the member list to get information. Remember to stay active on both sites and you are welcome to speak with Chad and Amanda if you have more questions.
