Rotary Program Summary 1/9/19
Topic: Dealing with Home or Business Disasters
Presenter: Judy Foy from Plan B Appraisals and Inventory Assets
Disasters occurs when we least expect them. Fewer than 50% of households are prepared for an emergency. An even smaller number of households have an inventory of their personal items in place. An average home has 300,000 items in it and can burn to the ground in just three minutes. Family legacy items, such as sentimental items and photos, can create huge voids in our lives when they are lost. IF your possessions, memories, and history are important you must work to have a plan in place for your home or business.
To prepare for a disaster here are the steps to consider:
Begin by assessing disaster scenarios: fire, tornadoes, and flooding are most common in this area. Also consider gas explosions, theft, computer crashes, and water pipes bursting. Create a Grab and Go File of your household inventory and important papers. This could be scanned and placed on a thumb drive.
To create a home inventory:
Photograph every room. Begin by going room by room, start in the entryway and take pictures of each room - capturing an overall view of your possessions. Once you have an inventory on your phone, be sure to back it up somewhere else. You will need to create a list of ALL items. This will be time consuming. You need to note: when you bought the item, how much it cost, where you bought it. Judy Foy recommends working on this 15 min. A day. You can often download a template from your insurance co website. Judy is also available to complete this task for you through Plan B Appraisals and Inventory Assets.
Typically, until a company gets the inventory list, nothing can happen to the home. This means that more damage can occur. Getting the inventory done ahead of time will make the claim process so much easier.
Questions to consider
What are your most important items?
Does this item have sentimental value?
Is this item still important?
Scan Items:
Photos are among your most cherished possessions. Scanning and backing things up digitally is important. Don’t forget about your legacy items. Be sure to write down your memories and history regarding these items. Take photos of family memorabilia. Consider purchasing special storage - archival boxes are designed to preserve such items.
