The State Historical Society of Wisconsin was founded in 1846, two years before statehood! The Historical Society Foundation maintains, in Madison, the second largest History Library in the United States. The Historical Society is supported both by tax dollars and by very active friends organizations. Twelve historic sites range from Blackpoint on Lake Geneva to Madeline Island. Old Worlds Friends was organized in 1984. It has helped with relocation of historic buildings and other improvements and provides volunteers to the site.
Dan Freas' background is in Museum and Bi-lingual Administration. He has also spent time with the Disney organization. This has given him a background in engineering sites for convenient, entertaining as well as educational public use. The tornado that struck Eagle two years ago leveled many trees that shaded the parking and entrance area. This was tragic but also an opportunity to update the entrance and flow of visitors to Old World.Dan's plan is to provide friendly orientation, relaxing amenities, interactive experiences and exceptional customer services to visitors. These must also be combined with revenue opportunities that provide visitors with shopping that they desire and that keeps the site financially viable.
The windmill area is being developed to demonstrate history, technical achievements and possibilities as well as engineering and math demonstrations. Relaxing amenities include a beer garden
alongside the proposed historic brewery to compliment the German heritage in Wisconsin.
P.S. The Thursday evening reception for Kirt and Dixie Fiegel at the Chamber Office was well attended by current and former Rotarians. Recognition of Kirt as a kingpin in the founding of the club as well as his civic contributions was appropriate. Many Thanks to Chris, Jeff and all who helped to organize the event.
