Our speaker today spoke about victim’s rights and Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin. “Marsy” was a University of California Santa Barbara student who was stalked and killed by her ex-boyfriend in 1983. Her family suffered through an ordeal that resulted in them advocating for victim’s rights across the country. California, Illinois, and many states, most recently Ohio have all passed legislation to this effect. In Wisconsin, the bill has to go to the state legislature twice and then to referendum so it will be 2019 before that happens. It has bi-partisan support and the changes to the state constitution are not controversial. Example of one change is to change ‘notification to timely notification’ of court proceedings so victim’s family can attend. Also privacy rights for the victim so the court cannot bring up social media accounts and other personal information about the victim that are irrelevant to the crime. If you support this you can ask your Legislator to support AJR 47 and SJR 53.
Be sure to catch Toe to Toe Ballet's performance of A Child's Nutcracker, starring Rotariaons Chris Clapper, Dawn Heath, and Jason Tadlock! The performances will be on Dec 15 @ 7pm, Dec 16 @ 2pm & 7pm, and Dec 17 @ 2pm at the historic Sprague Theater.
