Our speaker today was Larry Gaffey, General Manager of the Walworth County Fair. Last year, they developed a strategic plan and made many improvements. Previously, the Fair was losing money but in 2016 they had a perfect year and are now making money. They spent a lot of money on upkeep and improvements on the grounds. For example, they put a new roof on the picnic shelter, bought a tractor, bought land from the school district, expanded and remodeled the offices, and built two new 50-stall horse barns which will enable them to host more horse shows. To balance these expenses, revenue was up for the Fur & Feather sale, the meat & animal sale, the pork chop cookout, Fair ticket sales, and revenue from soda machines and ATM machines, to name a few. This August they will host a big equine show that used to be held in Madison and they have more barrel racing horse shows. The campground is now open for camping, there are many new camp sites and they are listed as an official campground for the county. Unlike other fairgrounds in the state, Walworth County is a private, non-profit. One of their big events last year was Rib Fest, which will be held this summer from July 14-16. This event, along with the Flea Markets, were some of the most successful events held, besides the Fair. The fairgrounds is truly a gem for Elkhorn and Walworth County.
