Dan Wedige talked about Flea Market parking this Sunday and passed around a map that explained the order of parking. We have enough help and everyone should take a vest.
Dawn Heath has posters available about the self-defense classes she has organized. Take one and post it.
Julie Morse gave a talk to the Club about childhood cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The Gold Ribbon represents childhood cancer, like the pink ribbon represents breast cancer. She shared a personal story about her son who was diagnosed with liver cancer at age four. He had surgery and chemotherapy but had a serious recurrence which required a second surgery. He started kindergarten bald but did completely recover and now is in his 30’s, married with a two-year old and lives in California. Here are some statistics: a child is diagnosed with cancer every 3 minutes. The average age of a child who is diagnosed is six. There are more than 15,000 diagnoses a year. Two-thirds of those will have some long lasting chronic health conditions. Only 4% of federal cancer research funding goes to pediatric research. To fill the gap, there are many wonderful organizations. Julie talked about three, but there are many others. St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital is located in Memphis, Tennessee and leads the way by having the most clinical trials, taking the toughest cases and having the best survival rates. Families do not receive a bill. Started by actor Danny Thomas, his daughter Marlo is a spokesperson. Another is Sunshine Kids based in Houston, Texas. They provide support systems that allow kids to play and adds to their quality of life. This is also free to families and can make a child’s wish come true. Kisses from Keegan is a local Foundation based primarily in southeastern Wisconsin, and they also provide support and opportunities for families outside of treatment.
Julie and her son wrote a book called, When Billy Went Bald, which took 12 years to publish. They are now trying to make copies available at hospitals and clinics across the country. They donated three copies to the Elkhorn public library and elementary schools.
